Narrative

In the 1960s, I could see many screen paintings on windows and doors in the Canton and Fells Point areas in Baltimore, Maryland. I was very much influenced by this way of displaying art. So I started painting window screens in the late 1960s and early 1970s using landscapes and rock stars.

In the early 1970s, I also experimented with my first kinetic paintings, using multi-layered screens for kinetic paintings. The motion in the anti-art kinetic paintings were actually created by spectator motion, as the viewer moves from side to side viewing the picture, motion is created by way of overlapping screens and spectator motion. Later in the 1970s, I used the reflective properties of plastics for a similar form of spectator motion using the reflective properties of plastics. This way of creating anti-art kinetic paintings continued throughout the 1980s.

In the early 1990s, I started experimenting with actual motion. This was similar to spectator motion, except now the motion had been created by a physical electro-mechanical means. Using a small motor with a gear-train and 5 volt power supply, these elements were used to turn a large wheel that had patches of screeens placed to create motion, as the inner part of the anti-art kinetic painting combined with the outer screen painting to create moire patterns, resulting in an array of moving patterns that seemed to make the trees flicker and the water flow.

In 1993, I went to New Mexico and there I met Ulrich Niemeyer in 1995, as he was the Director of Design Foundation at Northern New Mexico Community College in Espanola. He was starting a new program for artist using the computer for 2D/3D design using Bauhaus principles. and I was hooked. In 1998, a local newspaper writer noticed my digital moire animations and published my work in the Rio Grande Sun. Then I met Dr. Drake Bingham in 1998, as he was working as the Director of Mass Communication at New Mexico Highlands University. He allowed me to develop my anti-art kinetic painting as an art project for my graduate work using animation (inner layer) with 2D/3D design (outer layer), which hung on a wall. For the first time, I was able to incorporate my early knowledge with anti-art kinetic painting using animated motion combined with Bauhaus principles of 2D/3D design using the computer in 2003, and this work was also published in the Rio Grande Sun by Gino Brazil.

Since then, I have created and sold many anti-art kinetic paintings using flat panel monitors as well as rear-projection systems combined with 2D/3D printing.
